Kia Ora - Hello!

There have been a few successes for our Parafed Wellington teams lately which is a credit to those volunteers who get things and people rolling! Also it has been great to see volunteers taking on Boccia and organising regular activities for these athletes. Congratulations and thank you to you all.

It has been a slow start for many activities due to scarce funding streams and our inability to just do it. However your committee is committed to keep working toward having a Sport Development position working for members in the region. Your support is essential and would be most welcome. Our current volunteers are doing a sterling job and are a positive base with which to work- further success is on its way.

Until the next time – ka kite ano.

Youth Sports Club

Martin Mooij and his cute sisterWe often say we cater for people of all ages but I suspect Marten’s cute little sister only came along for the ride! The Mooij family attended most of the Youth Sports Club events but has recently shifted to Australia. Our best wishes go with them.

Congratulations!

Parafed Wellington Wheelchair Basketball player Marcus Thompson has been selected to represent New Zealand to compete in the 2011 Asian Oceania qualifying series for the London Paralympic Games in 2012. He heads overseas to Korea 1-13 November 2011 for this series.

Paul Fallon was selected as a non travelling reserve and they have been our top Wheelchair Basketball players for several years now and have put in innumerable hours of training to achieve the level of expertise and fitness required for selection into this elite squad of very experienced players.

Congratulations must also go to Karl Hobman who is in the Development Squad and joins Marcus and Paul as often as possible in their training regime.

Last and certainly by no means least, congratulations to Gavin Rolton and Chris Lay from the Wellington Wheelchair Rugby team who are in the NZ Wheelblacks squad and have gone overseas several times in this capacity. What a wonderful achievement for these two fantastic W/C rugby athletes.

We have some amazing athletes amongst our members and in the next issue we will update you on what some of the others are up to. Fantastic achievements and well done everyone!

Payroll Giving

Payroll giving is a voluntary scheme that enables people to make donations directly from their pay to a chosen "donee organisation". Parafed Wellington - officially listed as Wellington Paraplegic & Physically Disabled Assn. Inc. is an IRD Approved Donee organisation.

The scheme is administered through Inland Revenue's PAYE tax system. Employers who electronically file their employer monthly schedule and deduction using Inland Revenue's ir-File can sign up for the scheme and make it available to their staff. Then, if they wish, staff members can make donations directly from their pay to the donee organizations of their choice. Check with your employer to ascertain if they are signed into this scheme.

People who donate through Payroll giving receive tax credits relating to the donations they make each payday which means they no longer have to wait to claim tax credits at the end of the tax year.

You, your family, friends and work colleagues can support our organisation AND claim a tax credit where applicable by signing up to donate each payday.

Check it out with your 'Boss'.

Sports Board Information

Wheelchair Basketball Team

The HK team recently travelled to Auckland to play at the North Island Champs. The players were:

• Marcus Thompson
• Paul Fallon
• Karl Hobman
• Scott Baldwin
• Rautini Thompson

Geoff Palmer attended as a Ref and Classifier and Garry Smith attended as a Ref.

We played 5 games over the weekend winning 3, 1 against Auckland 4, Auckland 3 and Otago, losing to Canterbury and Auckland 2.

At this tournament Marcus was named as a member of the NZ wheelchair basketball team that is heading to Korea later this year, looking to qualify for the Paralympics in London in 2012. Good luck Marcus. Paul was selected as a non-travelling reserve.

They were to attend a tournament in Otago from 19th to 21st August, but unfortunately it had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers.

Training sessions have been few and far between for the Hutt Valley Hawks, due to family issues and injuries, but we are looking at getting some serious training in before Nationals in October and are looking forward to the arrival of the new chairs.

On the upside I have secured $1500.00 in sponsorship for the Team and $500 of personal sponsorship thanks to New World Metro Railway. Exodus Health and Fitness have agreed to give us $500.00 in January 2012.

Boccia

A consistent group of between 10 and 16 players turn up every 1st and 3rd Saturday each month to the Knox Church Hall at 574 High Street, Lower Hutt to participate in this sport - some just for the fun and great company and others for the competitive side.

Appreciative thanks to Andy Henderson, Colin Frude and Rachel Horwell who organise these sessions and coach and encourage those who are not familiar with the rules.

On Saturday 17 September, Luke Morriss, Director of Boccia, Cerebral Palsy NZ is visiting from Auckland and will coach and do some skills sessions between 10am – 4pm. Not to be missed!

WRC Tournament and the Nationals (which is due to be played on the 25/26 August) are the only tournaments that were played. Due to the earthquake damage and low funding, the Low Pointers tournament was cancelled and WRC1 which was to be held in Canterbury as the hall was being used as a Medical Centre.

Wellington played some good rugby, we have had some new players arrive to train this year, and unfortunately we lack high pointers so are still having to import players to boost our team to stay competitive.

We also welcome able bodied people to our sport – like Bob Wellington, Kristene Mos and Yvonne Mackie who have dedicated their time to helping the team with Bob almost having a fulltime job maintaining our Rugby chairs in his spare time, Kristene coming to practices to help ref games and Yvonne managing all the travel arrangements. Thank you, we really appreciate your help.

A special mention goes to Gavin Rolton who is a representative in the NZ Wheelchair Rugby team. This year he has travelled with the team to Canada and Australia and will be travelling to Korea at the end of the year. Well Done Gav.

If you are interested in playing Wheelchair Rugby, please call Yvonne on 239 9123 or the Parafed office 233 8095 for further information.

"Trevor"

Eileen O’Callaghan (with daughter Glenda Young’s ok) has very kindly donated her almost new mobility scooter to Parafed Wellington.

When she bought her Horizon scooter in October 2010 Eileen named it “Trevor”. Painted racing car red it’s in perfect condition, but as it’s lying idle now, Eileen decided Parafed could lend it out to our paid up members on a temporary basis when needed.

There will be a fee charged, relevant to circumstances of the person hiring it, and to cover Insurance and maintenance costs etc.

Direct any enquiries to the Parafed Office 233 8095 between 9am-5pm Monday to Wednesday.

Acknowledgement from Parafed Wellington

Thank you very much to all the volunteers involved in Parafed events as quite obviously the programmes we offer wouldn’t be as successful without your support. Families, friends, and buddies all contribute significantly and we want you to know you are valued and we appreciate you immensely.

We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the funders who support us, as without the financial resources you allocate for our athletes to participate in their chosen sport, it just wouldn’t happen!

Thank you so much!
